EPL: Graeme Souness warns Southgate against Manchester United move

Manchester United’s recent struggles have put manager Erik ten Hag’s job under pressure, and reports suggest that the club’s new part-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is considering appointing England manager Gareth Southgate as his successor.

However, Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has issued a warning to Southgate, advising him to avoid taking up the job.

Souness said the Manchester United job is “fraught with danger” and carries an immense weight on the manager’s shoulders.

He also stated that whoever takes up the job will be faced with a tremendous task. He added that the current manager may still be in charge next year.

Manchester United’s disappointing 2023–24 season has seen them fall out of the Premier League title race and the Champions League, leaving Ten Hag’s future uncertain.

However, Souness believes that Southgate should steer clear of the job, highlighting the significant challenges that come with the role.

“I don’t think he’d be a good fit,” Souness told talkSPORT.

“That is a job that is fraught with danger, whoever gets it. Maybe we are being rude to the current manager there—he may be there next year—but being manager of Man Utd carries a hell of a lot of weight on your shoulders.”
