Euphoria’s Maude Apatow to Make Feature Film Directorial Debut With Poetic License

Maude Apatow, the daughter of Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann who stars in HBO’s Euphoria, will make her feature film directorial debut with Poetic License.

Per Deadline, Apatow is directing Poetic License, a film that sees “two inseparable best friends, Sam and Ari, start to unravel as they compete for the affection of Liz, the middle-aged mom auditing their college poetry workshop.”

The film comes from Jewelbox Pictures, a new production company created by Maude Apatow and Olivia Rosenbloom. Poetic License is written by Raffi Donatich.

What else do we know about Poetic License?

Maude Apatow said that Poetic License “encapsulates the pressures of growing up, and how those pressures don’t necessarily ever go away. It’s a coming-of-age story for all ages. I think this movie is universal, timeless, and has the potential to be something very special. I couldn’t be more excited to bring it to life.”

Josh Church and Harrison Kreiss will produce Poetic License alongside Apatow and Rosenbloom.

In addition to Poetic License, Jewelbox Pictures is producing two other movies: How to Murder Your Life, which is written by Cat Marnell, and Female Friendship, which is directed by Emily Rappaport and may star Apatow.

“We have both always been drawn to flawed and complicated characters and using comedy as a tool to tell their stories,” Apatow and Rosenbloom said of Jewelbox Pictures. “We are so excited to launch Jewelbox and hope it can be a home for artists with distinct voices and perspectives to develop compelling original ideas.”

Apatow is known for playing Lexi Howard in HBO’s Euphoria. She’s also appeared in a number of her father’s movies — 2007’s Knocked Up, 2009’s Funny People, 2012’s This Is 40, and 2020’s The King of Staten Island — while she additionally starred in 2018’s Assassination Nation and 2020’s Hollywood.

Poetic License does not yet have a release date.
