Police arrest Onitsha ‘beggars’ who make N25,000 daily

Two men who allegedly used abducted children for alms begging in Onitsha and made N25,000 daily have been arrested by the Anambra state police.

The suspects were identified as Friday Edet and Ezekiel Ubong, both from Akwa Ibom State.

The suspects, who had since been detained at the Onitsha prisons, claimed to be members of a humanitarian group.

PUNCH Metro reports that the group specialised in parading children with different kinds of ailment and using them for alms begging.

They were arrested by the Fegge division of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Fegge Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Rabiu Garba, who confirmed the incident, said the suspects were notorious for using abducted children for alms begging in locations different from their states after inflicting injuries and ailments on them to attract public sympathy.

Garba said six boys with hernia, as well as a three-year-old girl with cancer of the lips, who were abducted by the suspects, had been rescued and reunited with their families.

In the same vein, another man named Bashir Adamu who said he only robs expatriates worshipping at the National Mosque, Abuja was arrested yesterday for allegedly assaulting motorists and snatching phones and handbags.

He added that he had stolen phones at the National Mosque twice before he was apprehended by the Federal Capital Territory police operatives.

Adamu claimed that he had stolen only two phones, adding that the first handset was recovered by its owner, while the police retrieved the second stolen phone.

But police sources noted that the suspect was arrested about a fortnight ago for snatching a phone at the mosque, adding that he was arraigned and granted bail before he was re-arrested for a similar offence last Friday.

Adamu, who admitted that he was just released on bail, said:

“I only target oyinbo people (expatriates) who come to the National Mosque to pray on Fridays.

“Sometimes, they give alms and while they are doing that, I steal their phones or bags from their car and run. I use the money to feed,” he added.
