Real Madrid Should Stick To Basketball - Hristo Stoichkov Taunts

The former Barcelona striker has mocked the club's "shameful" record of winning just one league title in seven seasons


legend Hristo Stoichkov has taunted Real Madrid for their record in La Liga over the past decade and says the club are more concerned with their basketball team.


Madrid won the Champions League last season but will end this term trophy-less, while Barca have already been crowned La Liga champions and remain on course for the treble after reaching the Champions League and Copa del Rey finals.


Stoichkov has subsequently taken a swipe at the Blancos' recent league record and performances, joking that the club's basketball team are now more successful.


"It's shameful they have won just one league title in seven seasons," the Bulgarian told Radio4G, echoing the sentiments of his former Camp Nou coach Johan Cruyff.


"I think – even at my age – I'd win more than one Spanish title playing with a load of former players.


"This year the Meringues seem to have attached more importance to their basketball team [who triumphed in the EuroLeague final last Sunday, the basketball equivalent of the Champions League], because they'll be watching the football finals on television!"


Stoichkov also criticised Madrid supporters who have whistled club captain Iker Casillas this season, suggesting the goalkeeper should not let a minority of fans affect him.


"Iker is a world football icon who has won everything there is and shouldn't have to leave Real Madrid because four or five or six low-lifes boo him," he added.


Real Madrid finish their season on Saturday at home to Getafe, after which Ancelotti is expected to be sacked, with Rafa Benitez the current frontrunner to take over from the Italian.
