AWCON 2016: Falcons chase 10th title against hosts Cameroon

The Super Falcons of Nigeria, are seeking to win their 10th African Women’s Cup of Nations, when they take on hosts Cameroon in the final of this year’s competition.

Nigeria clinched a record ninth title in Windhoek, Namibia in 2014 and came into the tournament not only as defending champions, but as favourites to win it.

Florence Omagbemi’s ladies began in emphatic style, thumping Mali 6-0 in their first group game . They were held to a 1-1 by West African rivals Ghana in their next game However, they went on to defeat Kenya 4-0 in their final match, to qualify for the semi-final as group winners ahead of the Black Queens .

Their semi-final clash against South Africa was another tight affair, but Desire Oparanozie’s heavily deflected free-kick settled the contest in the second half.

The Falcons will now try to prove they are a dominant force in African women football, when they file out on Saturday to take on the hosts, who will be desperate to win it in front of a fevered home crowd.
