Liverpool's Randall hoping to push on

The defender, who made his debut for the Reds in 2015-16, is intent on making more of an impact in the new campaign even if that means going elsewhere on loan

Connor Randall is aware it will be challenging to command a regular spot at Liverpool, but he is determined to kick on as he sharpens his fitness and experience during the club’s pre-season tour.

The 20-year-old is savouring every bit of his education in the United States as Jurgen Klopp whips the squad into shape ahead of his first full campaign in charge of the Anfield side.

“This is the first pre-season tour I've been on and it's great to be involved,” he said after a light session at Stanford University, in which the players focused primarily on stretching.

“The training has been great and it's a big chance to improve and impress while you're out here.

“I know how big the club is. You see it with all the fans and all the facilities.

“You're halfway around the world and the fans all know your name. It's overwhelming but it's great experience.

“I’m glad I'm on the tour and I want to take it all in.

“We're working together and planning for the new season. Everyone is working hard to ensure they're ready to go when the season starts.”

Randall, who made his debut against Bournemouth in the League Cup last October and enjoyed six further appearances, is intent on making a greater impact in 2016-17.

“It was something I've always wanted and waited for,” he said of his first start for the club.

“It was a great season to make my debut. To play that first game at Anfield was something I've always dreamed of since I was a kid.

“It meant a lot, but now it's about pushing on and doing my best to improve.

“It's a hard task to become a regular at a club like this but that's the target.

“I’ll keep trying my hardest. I'll look to improve and give my best. That's all I can do.”

The defender is yet to discuss his future with Klopp, but admitted he would consider a loan move as he looks to elevate his game in the season ahead.

“We've not had that conversation yet,”

Randall said. “I’m just focused on the tour and then we'll see if that conversation occurs. I'm taking each day as it comes.”

On whether a temporary deal away from Anfield would be appealing, he added: “That's something that if the chance came up, we would have to speak about it.

“Getting games is the main thing. We'll have to wait and see. But I'm not thinking about that now.

“I’m just thinking about this tour.”

Randall, a product of Liverpool’s academy, saluted the club’s youth structure, as starlets Ben Woodburn, Ovie Ejaria and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all impressed during pre-season.
“It's a great set-up,” he said.
“I’ve been there since I was six and seen a lot of different people working there.

“They do everything they can for the young players coming through.

“When youngsters have had a chance in the games they've done well. I think it just shows the talent is there.

“And when you've got a manager like Jurgen Klopp who is willing to give young players a chance then it motivates those players even more.

“I am sure there will be plenty more players coming through from the academy.”

Randall is also enthused that Steve Heighway is involved with the development of the club’s starlets again.

“I had him coaching me when I was young. I was six when I first went and then signed when I was nine,” he explained.

“Steve Heighway was massive on and off the pitch. He's a good man and I learned a lot from him.

“It's great that he's back working at the academy.
“I saw him down there last season. He's a great coach. He's got so much knowledge and experience and talent he can pass on to young players. That can only help the club going forward.”
