A Scottish derby match was marred when a fan ran onto the pitch and allegedly SPAT at one of the players. Kevin Adam of Irvine Vics says that a supporter of rival side Irvine Meadow approached him on the field of play after he scored a penalty during a heated match on Friday night.

The man, who is thought to be in his mid-40s, is alleged to have launched a series of foul-mouthed insults towards Adam before spitting on his cheek, report the Daily Record.

Meadow assistant manager Neil McGowan immediately sprinted from the home dugout to usher the man off the park. The suspect was then ejected from the ground before police arrived.


The game was on the brink of being abandoned following the incident which coincided with fans of both teams invading the pitch. Referee Callum Scott took both sets of players up the tunnel and kept them in the changing rooms for 15 minutes until police arrived to restore order.

Police Scotland say no arrests were made at the match - which Meadow won 4-3 - but enquiries are ongoing.
