Northern Christian politicians demand more federal appointments

The Northern Nigeria Christian Politicians, NNCP, on Saturday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint more Christians from the North into public offices.

The group made the appeal in Abuja during a national prayer, award and reception in honour of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir David Lawal.

Speaking at the event, a member of NNCP committee, Dr. Jonathan Zwingina, also admonished the President to ensure that Northern governors imitate his gesture.


According to Zwingina, “While we are grateful to Mr. President, we want to encourage him to appoint more christians into public offices, and that he should also urge all northern governors to emulate him.”

Zwingina observed that giving more public offices to Christain will ensure true peace and unity in the region.

Meanwhile, NNCP, has said past Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo failed to address the challenges of the northern Christians.

The group also praised the administration President Muhammadu Buhari for coming to their rescue, and recognizing them as a political force.


The NNCP chairman, Hon. Keftin Amuga, addressing a press conference, said that for the first time, a Northern Muslim President would recognise the Northern Christian group as a political factor and political force.

According to them, “This is a signal which could lead to the emergence of a truly united Northern Nigeria people, devoid of religious bigotry.”

“Since the third republic, the Christian North has variously given its support to our Southern Christian brothers, the likes of Obasanjo and Goodluck to be President of Nigeria, but unfortunately, because they have limited knowledge and do not appreciate our challenges, they failed to address the peculiarity of the Northern Nigerian Christian population.

“This is in sharp contrast to what PMB promised and has done for the Christian North.”
