More honours for Nollywood’s golden boy, Ramsey Nouah

It is gold again for popular Nollywood actor and leading man, Ramsey Nouah. His effort as a leading man in the high-octane drama, ’76, directed by Izu Ojukwu, has earned him another peep, that of Best Actor at the recent Nigerian domiciled African International Film Festival (AFRIFF).

Ramsey played Captain Dewa in the big budget movie that opened in cinemas across the country yesterday. The movie had earlier premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and at the British Film Institute (BFI) London International Film Festival. And everywhere it showed, the beatific acquittal of the role of Captain Dewa by Ramsey was what was mostly discussed among festivalgoers and audiences.

No doubt, Ramsey bumped himself snugly into the role and gave a believable performance that can only rival his acquittal of the role he played in Kunle Afolayan’s box office hit, Figurine. And like this outing in ’76, the role he interpreted in Figurine earned him a continental peep at an early edition of the prestigious Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).

Clearly, Ramsey was exceptional in the role of Captain Dewa. He squared up so well with the other quality cast members, including Rita Dominic, Ibinabo Fiberisima and Chidi Mokeme to put up a world-class performance in the engaging movie that tells the story of a young officer from the Middle Belt who gets entangled in a romantic relationship and eventually marries a beautiful student from the Southeast.

However, Dewa and his beau’s budding romance was threatened by endless military postings, and they faced the ultimate test when news of the soldier’s involvement in a botched coup attempt hits the headlines. So, when it was time to announce the award for best actor for AFRIFF 2016 and Ramsey was named as a nominee, the crowd yelled ‘Ramsey Nouah’ even before the award presenters read out his name.

Though not new to winning awards, but that award from a continental festival, like the AFRIFF, merely confirms his rating as a leading and timeless actor, not just in Nigeria, but the continent of Africa.

An actor of many credits, who is one of the few Nollywood screen actors that can be described as ‘timeless,’ Ramsey is a stuff that Hollywood actors are made of. Hailed roundly as our own answer to the Hollywood star, Denzel Washington, Ramsey is unarguably one show biz personality that projects an aura of stardom and success and enjoys mass appeal, both within and outside Nigeria.

His stage charisma and kicks have won him a growing legion of fans across the globe. A Sagittarian, having been born in December, it was a push from a female friend and an early inclination for acting that inspired Ramsey’s incursion into acting on full time. As a young man, Ramsey loved to act and watch movies and was a big fan of the American acting icon, James Bond.

He admired Bond so much that he found himself most times in front of a mirror trying to play ‘James Bond’ in their little home in Ebute-Metta, Lagos. It was such an early inclination that got Ramsey, whose handsome face lights up several Nigerian love stories told in motion, never to really struggle to choose a career path when it was time to do so.

Born to an Israeli father, Ramsey Nouah Snr, and to Mrs. Margaret Afolabi, an ordained pastor from Owo in Ondo State, Ramsey’s career kicked off professionally when he got the opportunity to star in the celebrated Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) soap, Mega Fortune.
As Jeff Akin Thomas, son of the stupendously wealthy Akin Thomas, Ramsey not only found fame with that, he also got fortune as long as the soap lasted on television.

The fame and fortune was to multiply soon as he joined the home movie turf. Interestingly, Ramsey started off as an extra, but he grew in status as he ran along. It took his near beatific performance in some celebrated flicks, like Silent Night and Blind Trust for him to reign uproariously.
