FIFA Sacks General Secretary, Jerome Valcke

World football governing body, FIFA, has sacked its suspended General Secretary, Jerome Valcke.

The 55-year-old Valcke –a loyal lieutenant of the banned outgoing president Sepp Blatter, had been serving a 90-day ban since October for alleged involvement in the money laundering and racketeering scandal that has engulfed the Zurich-based body.

This comes after the FIFA independent Ethics committee last week opened formal proceedings at the behest of its investigators, who sought a nine-year ban for the Frenchman.

A FIFA statement read: “The FIFA emergency committee decided to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the position of FIFA secretary general with immediate effect. Jerome Valcke is therefore no longer the secretary deneral of FIFA.

“The employment relationship between FIFA and Jerome Valcke has also been terminated. The duties of the secretary general will continue to be assumed by the acting secretary general, Dr Markus Kattner.”

Valcke, appointed by Blatter in 2007, has denied any wrongdoing, despite emails and other documents which suggest he was aware that a Swiss marketing company was selling off World Cup and Confederation Cup tickets for almost five times their face value.
