Zidane shouldn't need a certificate to coach - Materazzi

The World Cup and European Championship winner is facing a ban for taking charge of Real Madrid's reserve team without having acquired the requisite licence

Zinedine Zidane 's reputation and stature in football should mean he does not require a certificate to coach, according to former foe Marco Materazzi.

The Frenchman received a three-month ban from coaching the Real Madrid reserve team because he does not have the required qualifications for training in Spain, as he picked up his Uefa licence in France to an inferior level.

Zidane has since launched an appeal against the suspension and has been cleared to continue coaching the team until the issue is resolved.

But Materazzi - who was infamously headbutted by Zidane at World Cup 2014 - believes it is ridiculous for someone of such a high standing within the game to require a licence.

"When you're champion like Zidane, Materazzi or a few others, you do not need a coaching badges to coach," the Italian told Canal Plus. "If you have 25-year career behind you, you should not need a certificate."

The former Italy defender also heaped praise on former Inter team-mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who, at 33, is up for the 2014 Ballon d'Or after firing Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title in 2013-14.

"Zlatan has been an icon everywhere where he has played," he added. "I can't say just the good things about this player because he still has the desire to improve.

"It is no coincidence that in every championship he has played in he has made the difference. This is a player who never gives defeated."
