AWC: Super Falcons, drawn against Ghana, Mali, Kenya

The Super Falcons have been drawn against archrivals, Ghana, as well as Mali and Kenya in Group B of the African Women Championship (AWC) slated to hold in Cameroun from November 19 to December 3.

In the draws held yesterday, Nigeria, which has dominated African women football, but failed to qualify for the last two Olympic Games, got a relatively easy group with Ghana being the only team of note in Group B.

Hosts, Cameroun, will have to go past South Africa, Egypt and Zimbabwe to play in the semifinals, where they will meet either Nigeria or Ghana in the semifinals, according to pundits.

Cameroun will kick off the championship on November 19 with the opening game against Egypt in Yaoundé. The other group opponents, South Africa and Zimbabwe, featured at the Rio 2016 Olympics and will be formidable foes for the Lionesses.
Matches of the championship will hold in Cameroun and Limbe, with the final set for December 3.

Nigeria has dominated the championship, winning it nine times out of 10, with Equatorial Guinea taking the other one.

This is Kenya’s maiden appearance in the championship, while Ghana, two-time finalists, is an old customer to the Falcons.

Mali’s appearance in the championship is fortuitous as it benefitted from Equatorial Guinea’s expulsion from the competition.

Cameroun 2016 will test Zimbabwe’s newfound stature as the rising star of African women football as they face two of the continents perpetual semifinalists, Cameroun and South Africa.
