400 Katsina Farmers Ordered To Vacate Grazing Reserve

No fewer than 400 persons allegedly encroaching into over 10km of grazing reserve in Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State have been directed to vacate the land.


The chairman of the state standing committee for the improvement of relationship between farmers and Fulani herdsmen, Abdul’aziz Lawal K-Tsauri, confirmed this at Safana yesterday when he stormed the affected area.


Represented by Chigarin Katsina, Aminu Mamman Dee, the committee chairman said the state government would no longer tolerate encroachment into Rugu forest reserve and noted that acts of indiscipline were the major causes of farmers-Fulani herdsmen clashed.


He expressed worry over the startling revelation that over 10km of forest reserve in the area had been converted illegally to farm land.


The District Head of Safana and Yariman Katsina, Sada Rufa’I, who accompanied the committee to a dialogue with some of the farmers encroaching on the forest, appealed to government and Katsina Emirate Council to consider the plights of peasant farmers without land in the area.
In his speech, one of the encroachers, Dahiru Sulaiman Runka, expressed readiness to comply with government directive and vacate the grazing reserve.
