I m0aned; a hand was tapping me on my shoulder. I blinked, shut my eyes, and blinked again. My mind was fuzzy, the last remnants of my dream has been chased away with the realization that I am now awake. I yawned, and managed to fully open my eyes. A figure was standing in front of me but my vision was still blurred. Soon, my vision began to clear and I saw a nurse in blue tunic standing in front of me.
“Sorry for disturbing you from your sleep Sir.
You must have had a difficult day,” She said.
I closed my eyes again and opened it. Suddenly,
it all began to come back to me.
Sh*t!
Oh my God!
I remember being led out of the delivery room by the doctor. And since then, I had been sitting on this long chair, sleeping. I managed to bring out my phone from my pocket. I looked at the time; 5:30pm! I have been sleeping for close to 3 hours!
Gosh, I hate myself. I came to this hospital to be with my wife in the delivery room and to give her all the support she needs, instead I was here sleeping.
“…..doctor’s office.”
I looked up immediately, “You were saying?”
I asked the nurse as I tried to hide my feeling of embarrassment.
“Please Sir, the doctor wants to see you in his office,” she said and smiled.
I took that as good news. I was already feeling a rush of delight as I walked down the hallway and knocked at the door with the inscription, ‘Dr. Philip.’
“Please come on in.” said a voice from the inside.
He was already waiting for me. I opened the door and entered inside the vast office.
Everything was neatly arranged. But I hate the smell of the office. At a point, I thought I was in a pharmacy shop. A long bookshelf with big medical books arranged carefully inside it, was placed at the left end of the white walled-office.
Is he also a lecturer at a medical school? I wondered.
“Please sit down sir,” said Dr. Philip as he motioned with his hand.
I sat down on a black revolving chair facing him.
“Do you want any drink?”
“No sir. Thanks,” I declined.
The doctor quickly stood up, smiled and extended his right hand across the huge desk.
“Congratulations Sir, you are now the father of a new born baby girl.”
A rush of excitement shot through me. I stood up and shook hands with him.
“Really?” I was so happy. Nothing could contain the joy that I felt.
“Yes,” the doctor said matter-of-factly. “The baby was safely delivered. We have finished with the Apgar score. She is healthy and so full of life,” he paused for a moment and continued, “Sorry for excusing you out of the delivery room earlier. You can now go and see your baby.” The doctor’s weather-beaten face brightened.
